Handoff File
A long conversation does not have to be lost. One document, and the next chat starts where this one stopped.
First sentence to type
“Write a handoff for another session.”
What it does
- Reads a conversation that has become too long and writes the handoff a fresh chat can start from.
- Six sections: the goal, the decisions with their reasons, the facts and numbers, where it stands, the open questions, and the first message to paste.
- Lists the files and artifacts that do not travel, by name, so nothing is silently lost.
What it will not do
- Will not write a narrative summary of the conversation - six sections, no retelling.
- Will not invent a decision or a number that was not stated in the chat; a gap is written down as a gap.
Install - three minutes, pick one
- claude.ai, Customize, Skills, Add, Upload skill - upload handoff-file.zip. Start here: it works in the chat that is already too long.
- claude.ai, Projects, New project, Instructions - paste everything below the dashed line.
- Claude Code or Cowork - save it as CLAUDE.md in the project folder.
Needs
Any Claude plan. Run it in the old chat, not the new one - the handoff has to be written by the conversation that still remembers.
After this file
The next file comes out the same way, one at a time. The short videos show each one working before it is released.
This file is free and asks for nothing in return - no email, no account. Memory availability differs by plan and account; if memory is not available in yours, the paste-into-a-project version does the same job.
